Melanie Chambers, a photo editor at O, is regularly invited to pose for the magazine’s photo assignments. She painstakingly polishes her nails once a week, but the results aren’t always worthy of a close-up photo. Melanie was guided through the process of applying Roseann’s perfectly polished technique by manicurist Roseann Singleton. To begin, instead of her customary pinks, consider a deep purple that will stand out more against her pale complexion.
- Trim Your Nails
Make certain that they are completely dry (filing wet nails can cause splitting). Always look your best when your nails are rounded, similar to the shape of your cuticle, and reach just past the border of your fingertip.

- Soak Your Fingernails
Apply a liberal layer of hand cream on your hands. After that, immerse your fingernails or toes in warm, soapy water for five minutes to soften the cuticles. (If you want to use your iPad or read a magazine, you must do it with one hand at a time.)
- Push Your Cuticles Back
Push your cuticles back into place with a moist nail stone. You should not trim your cuticles unless you have a hangnail; only do it if you have one (they protect nails from infection).
- Begin by applying a basecoat.
It spreads the color more evenly and keeps it brilliant for a longer period of time. Think about using the OPI Natural Nail Base Coat. If your nails have ridges, you might use Essie’s Ridge Filling Base Coat instead. 4. Begin by applying a basecoat to the surface.
- Apply two coats of color using a brush.
Using a paintbrush, apply two very light coats of color, stopping for a few minutes between each application. Apply polish to each nail in three distinct strokes to avoid chipping: first on either side of the nail, then in a sweep over the very tip.

- Finish with a top coat
Singleton likes CND Air Dry, a product that accelerates the drying process. Remember to apply the top coat in the same manner as you did the color, by swiping it across the top of each nail.
- Remove any smudges
Remove any color that has spread beyond the edges of your nails with an orange stick wrapped in a thin layer of cotton and soaked in nail paint remover.
